To achieve, at a low cost, an image reading device which has both functions of a sheet-through scanner and a flat-bed scanner capable of reading various types of originals without mounting numerous driving sources and is excellent in handling.
An image reading device includes: reading means including a sensor; drive means for moving the reading means in order to read originals placed on an original table; transportation means for transporting the originals in order to move them to the reading means stopped at a prescribed position for reading; transmission means for transmitting a driving force of the drive means to the transportation means in a state where the reading means is stopped at the prescribed position; and changeover means for permitting or regulating movement of the reading means from the prescribed position.
