To reproduce a highly discriminative image with a sharp character image by setting edged character image data according to an output indication for a previously indicated character, putting the data together with image data read out of an image projected on a film, and reproducing the result as a visible image.
A character image data generating device 110 of a photoprinter 10 stores character data corresponding to magnetic information of a character image sent from a film carrier 30 and outputs character data to be recorded on a print surface to a composition device 114 through an overlay memory 112 in response to the magnetic information of the character image and an indication for recording on the print surface. Here, the character data represents a reverse letter with a black edge, i.e., what is called an edge letter. The composition device 114 puts image data from a scanner 12 which has been processed by an image processing part 108 and the character data together and outputs them on a printer 16. Consequently, the sharp highly-discriminative edged letter can be recorded on the print surface.
