To provide an image scanner in relatively compact and light-weight constitution capable of optically reading even books or the like in an extremely satisfactory state.
For this image scanner 1, to a small-sized cabinet 12 of a prescribed length facing an opening part 3 formed in the longitudinal direction of a large-sized cabinet 2 pivotally supported invertibly inside both end parts of the large-sized cabinet 2, an image sensor element housed in the longitudinal direction near the side face side on the opposite side of the rotary shaft side is disposed. A roller 5 provided with a length almost equal to the length of the image sensor element is freely rotatably and pivotally supported facing the opening part 3 of the large-sized cabinet 2 close to and in parallel with the longitudinal direction of the image sensor element, and the roller 5 is reversibly rotatable and driven at a fixed speed by a motor 6.
