An imaging apparatus comprises pupil division means configured to limit light flux of an optical image of a subject incoming on each pixel of an imaging device to light flux from a specified exit pupil region of a photographic lens. According to a correspondence between each pixel of the imaging device limited by the pupil division means and the specified exit pupil region of the photographic lens, the imaging apparatus determines a range where contrast evaluation can be carried out. According to the determined range, the imaging apparatus determines a focus evaluation value of the subject from a contrast focal position or a correlation focal position.
