To achieve subject tracking processing and focus detection of high accuracy regardless of the constant level of a tracking target.
An imaging apparatus includes a focus state detection sensor 305 for focus state detection using a measurement point group set on an imaging screen and a photometric sensor 303 for detecting photometric image data of a subject. An AF control unit 304 calculates an amount of defocusing at each measurement point. An AE control unit 302 acquires the photometric image data to determine a tracking region of a subject. The AE control unit 302 determines the tracking region including measurement points adjacent to a measurement point selected by the AF control unit 304 and sets a tracking target position of the subject within the tracking region. The AF control unit 304 selects again a measurement point from the tracking target position and outputs position information and an amount of defocusing of this measurement point to a system control unit 306. The system control unit 306 drives a focus lens 213 to control a focus adjustment operation.
