To provide an imaging apparatus which achieves stabilization of the luminance of a face and can achieve exposure control for quickly making the exposure of the entire screen proper even when a state occurs in which the luminance value of the entire screen, such as switching of imaged scenes changes large.
The imaging apparatus includes: an imaging element 8 for imaging an object; a face detection circuit 16 for detecting a face in an image of the object imaged by the imaging element 8; and a luminance information detection circuit 17 for detecting the luminance value of the position of the face detected by the face detection circuit 16 and the luminance value of the entire screen. Further, the imaging apparatus includes a microcomputer 12 for calculating a correction amount from a compensation value obtained by applying a time constant to the luminance value of the face detected by the luminance information detection circuit 17 and the luminance value of the entire screen. The microcomputer 12 clears the compensation value and determines a correction amount when the luminance value of the entire screen between frames exceeds a threshold.
