An electronic still camera 10 being an imaging apparatus in which a CCD imaging element 20 photographs an object and electronically records the image of the object is provided with a second image processing part 34 for determining an area of interest in an image of an object to be electronically recorded during photographing, an image compressing/expanding part 36 for reversibly compressing image data of the area of interest or irreversibly compressing the image data with a compression rate lower than a specified value, and a consecutive photographing buffer 54 for recording the image data of the area of interest of a plurality of images by any image storage format of uncompressing, reversible compression by the image compressing/expanding part 36 and an irreversible compression by the image compressing/expanding part 36.
