An imaging apparatus, allowing detachable attachment of a lens unit having a photographic optical system including a focus lens, includes: imaging means that photo-electrically converts a subject image formed via the attached lens unit, to generate an imaging signal; and control means that generates information on driving of the focus lens of the lens unit on the basis of a high frequency component of the imaging signal to perform focus control, and performs fixed-length packet communication with the lens unit. The control means transmits information on an object position of the focus lens to the lens unit when performing first control, or transmits information on a drive speed and a driving direction of the focus lens to the lens unit when performing second control different from the first control.
