To provide a substitute means excellent in cost efficiency for an expensive mechanical type gyroscope by detecting movement by using a photoelement array such as a CMOS system image sensor.
The motion sensor for compensating movement of the imaging apparatus includes an array of photoelements and a controller. The array of photoelements is configured to acquire successive images of features of an environment within a field of view of the motion sensor. The controller correlates the successive first and second images to detect movement of the imaging device about a first axis and a second axis during the time interval by detecting differences in locations of the common features relative to the array of photoelements, and to provide first and second compensation signals, based on the correlation, to control opto-mechanical adjustments to counter detected movement of the imaging apparatus about the first and second axes while maintaining a substantially fixed relationship between a specified scene and an image plane.
