To reduce errors in focus detection caused by erroneous IS operation due to vibration associated with mechanical operation inside an imaging apparatus such as a mirror shock or a shutter shock.
The imaging apparatus 101 includes: a mirror 103 capable of advancing/retreating relative to an optical path from an imaging optical system; a focus detection means 206 performing focus detection operation by using light from the imaging optical system; and a control means 217 for controlling operation of a vibration proofing system 202 by detecting shake and displacing a vibration proofing optical element 111 in the imaging optical system. The control means stops the vibration proofing optical element from start of operation of the mirror after each imaging until finish of the focus detection operation before next imaging during consecutive imaging to be performed by operating the vibration proofing system.
