An imaging apparatus comprises: light emission instruction means 101 which instructs a light-emitting device 119 which emits photographic auxiliary light to emit the light; photometric means 117 which acquires photometric information; first focus detection means 118 which detects the focus adjustment state of a photographic optical system; and control means 101 which allows the photometric means 117 to acquire photometric information needed for calculating a light emission quantity of main light emission at the timing when the light-emitting device 119 performs preliminary light emission prior to main light emission in photographing according to the instruction of light emission and allows the first focus detection means 118 to detect a focus adjustment state at the same timing.
