To provide an imaging apparatus which can be reduced in size when a barrel device including a light control element is used.
An imaging apparatus 1 includes a barrel device 2 which emits imaging light made incident on itself while bending the optical path of the imaging light and an imaging device 3 which detects the imaging light emitted from the barrel device 2 so as to obtain an imaging signal. The barrel device 2 has a light control element (a liquid crystal light control element 26) in a bending area of the optical path of the imaging light. As compared with a conventional imaging apparatus in which the light control element is disposed in an area (in an optical path between the bending area and the imaging device 3) at the imaging device 3 side in the barrel device, an optical path length (lens length) of the imaging light arriving at the imaging device 3 needs only to be short for the installation space of the light control element.
