An imaging apparatus detects eyes in a face from an image which is photographed (S3); selects an eye having the largest size by comparing the sizes of the eyes that are detected (S9); compares the size of the largest eye that is detected with a prescribed value (S41); sets an AF area corresponding to the size and position of the selected eye if the size of the largest eye is determined to be larger than the prescribed value (S43); and sets an AF area corresponding to the size and position of the face to which the selected eye belongs if the size of the selected eye is determined to be smaller than the prescribed value (S45).
