To provide an imaging apparatus capable of performing inter-exposure zoom imaging by reliably catching a subject even when a camera shake occurs.
A change in the size of a subject on image data during displaying a through-image is detected and the drive amounts of a zoom lens 102b in each exposure during inter-exposure zoom imaging are calculated in accordance with the detected change in the size of the subject. It is determined whether adjustment by optical zooming can be performed in accordance with the drive amounts of the zoom lens 102b. An exposure operation and optical zooming are performed in exposure where adjustment by optical zooming is possible. An exposure operation is performed without performing optical zooming in exposure where adjustment by optical zooming is not possible. After the termination of exposure, an electronic zoom processing unit 206a performs electronic zoom processing with respect to image data where optical zooming has not been performed. Pieces of image data acquired in each exposure during inter-exposure zoom imaging are synthesized by a synthesis unit 206b.
