An imaging device includes: optical systems; and an imaging element that includes a plurality of pixels provided with a plurality of photoelectric conversion sections for receiving a plurality of light beams passing through regions of exit pupils having the optical systems different from one another and is capable of independently outputting image signals from the plurality of photoelectric conversion sections. In the imaging device, the plurality of photoelectric conversion sections of each of the plurality of pixels is divided into a plurality of groups individually containing at least two photoelectric conversion sections and parts of charge accumulation periods thereof are overlapped with one another among the different groups while the charge accumulation period is being shifted for each group. The imaging element is driven by a first drive for periodically and sequentially reading the image signals from the plurality of groups for each group. The image signals read by the first drive are added for each pixel while focus detection of a phase difference system is being performed on the basis of the image signals read.
