To adjust the brightness of a photographic image in response to the desire of a user in an image pickup device such as a digital camera.

The device is provided with a stroboscope 2 for irradiating an object with pre-emitted light and mainly emitted light as stroboscopic light. An operation input unit 32 capable of setting the light of a photographing result at a plurality of stages is provided. When the stroboscopic light is irradiated by the stroboscope 2 in the past photographing and a user performs setting for increasing brightness to the photographic result by using the unit 32, a microcomputer 36 invalidates the pre-emission of the light of the stroboscope 2 to increase the light-emitting amount of main light-emission.
