NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R is H or lower alkyl; n is 0 or 1) or its salt.
EXAMPLE: 1-(2,3-Dihydro-5-hydroxy-2,4,6,7-tetramethylbenzofuran-2-ylmethyl) imidazole.
USE: A remedy for hepatic diseases. It has excellent remedying action of hepatic diseases and high safety.
PREPARATION: The objective compound can be produced by protecting the phenolic OH group of the alcohol of formula II with benzyl group by conventional process, reacting with p-toluenesulfonyl chloride in pyridine, stirring the resultant p-toluene sulfonate of formula III in hydrogen atmosphere in an inert solvent such as ethanol in the presence of Pd/C at room temperature to obtain p-toluene sulfonate of formula IV and reacting the compound with excess imidazole in an inert solvent such as toluene.
