To provide an immersion type membrane separator capable of reducing aeration quantity required for stripping a cake layer from a membrane filter, enhancing removal capacity of the cake layer and easily forming a hardly passable water region on the filter membrane.
The immersion type membrane separator is provided with a membrane cartridge 3 which filters treated water and air diffuser pipes 5 which performs aeration for the membrane cartridge 3. The hardly passable water region 22 which hinders the permeation of the treated water is partially formed on the primary side surface of a microporous filter membrane 8 disposed on the membrane cartridge 3, comprises a hydrophobic thin sheet 22a that is adhered to the surface of the filter membrane 8 with an adhesive. Further, immersion type membrane separator has a plurality of belt-like parts 22b which are arranged at every specified intervals and intersect the horizontal direction with respect to the upward stream direction A formed by the aeration from the air diffuser pipes 5.
