To provide a method for immunizing a specimen against infection due to a Neisseria meningitidis serogroup Y including a process to administrate a composition containing one or more types of immunogenic polypeptide to the specimen.
The established dogma for meningococcus is that immunization against serogroups A, C, W135 and Y is based on the four different capsular saccharides, and that immunization against a serum group B is not be based on the capsular saccharide. In contrast, the invention uses polypeptide antigens and/or OMV to immunize against the serogroups A, C, W135 and Y (and particularly against serogroup Y). The serogroup B polypeptide can achieve this protection, thus permitting a single polypeptide-based vaccine to be used for protecting against all of the serogroups A, B, C, W 135 and Y.
