Title:
IMONONO SHORIHOHO
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS5129321
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
1473980 Treating castings HOWMET CORP 24 June 1975 3 July 1974] 26713/75 Heading B3F Superalloy castings such as turbine blades or vanes, or wheels, having internal voids are treated by heating, without any surface finishing operation, to a temperature allowing interdiffusion of the metal and subjecting the castings to a gaseous atmosphere of more than 10,000 psi, i.e. hot isostatic pressing. The gas is preferably Ar, but air can be used if the castings are first packed in a container, preferably together with a filler. The temperature is preferably below the solidus temperature. Gates and runners, cores and portions of the mould may be left in place during treatment. To achieve a casting as free as possible of surface voids, (i.e. by more rapid freezing), the mould may be preheated to a lower than normal temperature, or nucleants may be provided on the mould surface, e.g. cobalt oxide, cobalt aluminate, cobalt silicate. Examples are given of suitable Co and Ni based superalloys.
