To ensure the function of an implanted piece for a long period, and to release a proper amount of a needed substance, such as an enzyme or a hormone, or impart other needed metabolic functions for a long period.
The implantable immunoisolatory vehicle for imparting a biologically active product or function to an individual is comprised of (a) a core containing living cells and dispersed in a biocompatible matrix produced from a hydrogel, and (b) a jacket outward projected from the core, produced from a biocompatible material not containing the cells, surrounding the core, and having an outward diffusible surface. The living cells are preferably insulin-producing cells, adrenal chromaffinity cells, antibody-secreting cells, fibroblasts, astroblasts, β-cells, and ovarian cells of Chinese hamster. A material for the hydrogel is preferably an alginate cross linked with a polyvalent ion.
