PURPOSE: To catalytically reactively sweeten a sour hydrocarbon fraction by bringing a mercaptan-containing hydrocarbon fraction into contact with an alkali soln. containing a metal chelate and having a quaternary ammonium compd. added thereto.
CONSTITUTION: A mercaptan-containing hydrocarbon fraction is brought into contact with an alkali soln. containing a metal chelate and having a quatanary ammonium compd. represented by the formula (wherein R is about 20 or less C alkyl, a cycloalkyl, an aryl, an alkaryl or an aralkyl; R1 is about a 5-20C straight chain alkyl; R2 is an aryl, an alkaryl or an alkyl and (x) is a halogen, OH, nitrate, sulfate, phosphate, acetate, citrate or tartarate) added thereto to sweeten a sour hydrocarbon fraction in a catalytically reactive manner.
