Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a regenerated cellulose membrane having increased affinity for blood by bonding polyethyleneglycol monocarboxylic acid of specified formula of functional derivatives of the acid to a polymer membrane made of regenerated cellulose by ester linkage, in the production of regenerated cellulose membrane used for artificial kidney.

CONSTITUTION: The polyethyleneglycol monocarboxylic acid of formula I (where, n=1-150 and R is satd. or unsatd. C3-20 hydrocarbon residue) or functional derivatives of the acid and a catalyst for esterification are added to a reaction medium and the regenerated cellulose hollow yarn membrane is treated in the soln. After treating, the hollow yarn membrane is dried under reduced pressure to obtain an esterified regenerated cellulose hollow yarn membrane. By using the membrane, the activation of complement is controlled and the transitory leukopenia is sharply relieved. Since the reaction temp. is low and the reaction time is short in this method, the permeability and water permeability of the membrane are not changed and the membrane is easily produced.
