PURPOSE: To couple ends of freight cars in a semipermanent fashion by disposing a ball and raceway assembly in each of adjacent ends of slackless drawbar assemblies.
CONSTITUTION: A slackless drawbar assembly 10 comprises a female coupling member 20 with one end fitting in an end of a center sill and the other end extending outwardly from the center sill end; a male coupling member 50 with a first end rotatably disposed in a cavity 18 and a second end; a pair of shaft members 60 extending from the outer surface of a spherical member 58 partly disposed in an aperture cut through the first end of the male coupling member 50, partly arranged in openings cut through the side walls of the female coupling member 20 and having flat surfaces; a raceway assembly partly disposed in the aperture and secured to the male coupling member 50 so that its own inner surface is disposed around the spherical member 58; a pair of wedge means with one surfaces engaging the flat surfaces of the shaft members 60 and the other surfaces engaging flat vertical surfaces formed on the side walls partly adjoining the openings; and securing means for coupling the second end of the male coupling member 50 to the second end of another male coupling member 50.
