PURPOSE: To obtain a new lubricating base oil with high aromaticity while keeping a high viscosity index, by bringing a lubricating oil feeding raw material with a high viscosity index into contact with a dehydrogenation catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Catalyst hydrogenation treatment of a lubricating oil with a viscosity index of at least 125 (pref. at least 135) measured by ASTM D-567 is performed by using a composite dehydrogenation catalyst contg. the VII group precious metal ingredient, the IV group metal ingredient and a refractory oxide carried on a carrier pref., such as alumina, pref., at a temp. of 400-500°C under a hydrogen partial pressure of 5-15 barr and under a condition where LHSV is 2-10 kg/l catalyst.h and the ratio of gas/fed raw material is 500-1,200 Nl/kg to obtain the aimed lubricating base oil with an aromaticity of at least 3 mil mol/100 g.
