To perform stratified charge combustion with high stability and high fuel economy under a light-load driving condition while performing stratified charge combustion in a heavy-load driving condition without having any matter of concern about ignition plug smoking.
Under the light-load driving condition, a swirl flow is strengthened by a swirl control valve 13. Sprays injected from a fuel injection valve 11 is bent in the circumferential direction of a cylinder by the swirl flow, and are made to directly arrive at a discharging gap position of an ignition plug 12. On the other hand, under the heavy-load driving condition, the swirl flow is weakened, and the sprays ignited from the fuel injection valve 11 and blown up upward by a guide wall surface of a piston cavity 15 are made to arrive at the discharging gap position of the ignition plug 12.
