Abstract:
To conduct a perfect stratified-charge combustion throughout a wide range of the engine load.
The internal combustion engine includes a fuel-injection valve 11 for injecting fuel directly into a combustion chamber 1 formed above a piston 4, and an ignition plug 12 for conducting spark-ignition to an air-fuel mixture in the chamber 1. An external cavity 16 is made in a piston crown 15, and an internal cavity 17 is made in a bottom pace 16a of the external cavity 16. A normal 19, which is orthogonal to the bottom face 17a of the internal cavity 17, and extends to the combustion chamber, is inclined to the ignition plug 12 in relation to an injection center line 14 of the fuel-injection valve 11.
