To achieve early activation of a catalyst and reduction of HC generated by after-burning by drastically delaying ignition timing, to suppress adhesion of fuel spray to a wall face, and to reduce HC emission amount.
At cold start of an internal combustion engine requiring early temperature rise of a catalyst converter, ignition timing is set after a compression top dead center, and extremely retard combustion to inject fuel before the ignition timing and after the compression top dead center is performed. Since turbulence inside a cylinder is improved by the high-pressure fuel injection immediately before the ignition timing and flame spread is promoted, stable combustion can be achieved. A fuel injection valve 15 arranged in a side part of a combustion chamber 3 has a flat and sectorial shape of fuel spray f expanded approximately along a plane orthogonal to a cylinder axial line. The fuel spray f reaches the neighborhood of an ignition plug 14 without colliding with anywhere on an inner wall face (including a piston 2 top face) of the combustion chamber 3, and ignition is performed. Thus, HC emission amount is reduced.
