Abstract:

To perform stratification combustion operation which is excellent in fuel consumption and exhaust gas emission in a wider operation range.

A fuel injection valve is provided substantially at the central position of an upper surface of a combustion chamber, and an ignition plug is arranged adjacently to the fuel injection valve. A cavity having a substantially cylindrical shape is formed at the center of a crown plane of a piston. As stratification combustion modes, there are two stratification combustion modes such as a first stratification operation mode (mode 1) in which the fuel during injection or immediately after completion of the fuel injection as well as before colliding with the piston is ignited, and a second stratification operation mode (mode 2) in which the fuel having passed the piston after completion of the fuel injection is ignited. In the region where the engine rotating speed is low and the engine load is high, operation by the mode 2 is performed, and in the region where the engine rotating speed is high and the engine load is low, operation by the mode 1 is performed.
