Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure combustion stability while reducing generation of NOx by recirculating exhaust gas by controlling an exhaust gas recirculation quantity regulating means so that an exhaust gas recirculation quantity is reduced or canceled according to the increase of an intake temperature in compliance with an intake temperature detected by means of an intake temperature detecting means in a layer combustion time. SOLUTION: In controlling an exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) valve 30 serving as an exhaust gas recirculation quantity regulating means, in an ECU 16 inputting respective output signals from an intake temperature sensor 36 detecting an intake temperature and from another operating condition detection means 101, EGR is introduced only when an engine operating condition is in a late-term lean combustion operation mode or in a stoichiometric combustion operation mode. In other cases, that is, in an early-term lean combustion operation mode or in an open loop mode, EGR is prevented from being introduced. In a layer combustion time (a late-term lean combustion operation mode time), an exhaust gas recirculation quantity is set so that the exhaust gas recirculated in an intake passage is increased further as an air-fuel ratio is increased more.
