To restrain the generation of dioxins by providing a primary combustion step for combusting an object to be incinerated which has been fed to the inside of an incinerator body and a secondary combustion step for combustion an uncombusted portion of the combustion gas generated in the primary step, and adding an alkali to the object to be incinerated before it is combusted.
An incinerator 11 comprises a primary combustion portion 6 for combusting an object X to be incinerated which has been fed to the inside of an incinerator body 13 from a feeding portion 12 for the object to be incinerated, and a secondary combustion portion 8 which is connected to the primary combustion portion 6 for combusting uncombusted portion of the combustion gas. The incinerator 11 having such an arrangement is provided with an alkali adding mechanism 14 for adding an alkali, such as calcium carbonate to the object X fed to the primary combustion portion 6. Thus, by adding an alkali to the object X, the source of chlorine which is a constituent element of dioxins is removed so that generation of dioxins accompanying the combustion of the object X is restrained. There is also provided a transfer pipe temperature control mechanism 15 for rapidly cooling an exhaust gas in a transfer pipe 9 down to not more than 200°C.
