Abstract:

To produce a synthetic lubricant by a process for forming olefin oligomers in high yields.

An 8-16 C α-olefin monomer is oligomerized in the presence of a boron trifluoride catalyst and a linear alcohol promoter to produce a material for synthetic lubricants. Substantially all of the alcohols constituting the promoter should have at least four carbon atoms, and at least 80% of the alcohols constituting the promoter should have at least five carbon atoms.
