In the India ink grinder for grinding an India ink 3 by shuttling it back and forth on the surface of an inkstone 2, a device main body 4, an India ink retainer 13 for retaining the India ink 3, an India ink grinding direction transfer mechanism 10 which shuttles the India ink retainer 13 back and forth in an India ink grinding direction X connecting the ink well side with the flat height side of the inkstone 2, and a load adding means 15 for adding the load created by the pressure of the India ink 3 to the inkstone 2, to the India ink 3, are provided. The load adding means 15 is supported by the device main body 4 so as to enable relative transfer of the means 15 to the India ink retainer 13.
