To provide an inflator and airbag system which are superb in actuation flexibility.
Each of the inflator and airbag system of the present invention includes at least a heat generation body 2 whose gas generation element 1 is heated with electric energy and is made of a porous metal or the like, a gas generation agent abutting on the heat generation body 2, and a pair of positive and negative electrode parts 3 which are electrically connected to the heat generation body 2 and are used for electric connection to a power supply. Each of the electrode parts 3 is provided with an isolation means 4 that, when the heat generation body 2 is heated, disconnects the connection with an external circuit. This suppresses heat loss from the heat generation body 2 to the external circuit, upgrades efficiency of heat transfer to the gas generation agent in the heat generation body 2, and makes it possible to actuate the gas generation element 1 more quickly and more reliably.
