In an information providing system, an information providing server, which is connected via a communication network to two or more user terminals capable of reproducing a content, and provides a user who uses one of the user terminals with information about users who use the other user terminals, is provided with a use history receiving part 104 for receiving from the user terminals a history of a use including the identification information of the content reproduced by the user terminals; a user-based use history storage part 116 for storing the received history of uses and the identification information of each user who uses the user terminal by making them associate will each other; a user preference storage part 118 for storing information about the users' preferences estimated based on the history of uses and the identification information of each user who uses the user terminal by making them associate will each other; and a user search part 108 which, based on users' preference information stored in the user preference storage part, searches for one or two or more users with preferences similar to that of the user using the one of the user terminals.
