To provide an information recording medium and a recording/reproducing method and a recording/reproducing unit for the same capable of reproducing information recorded on the information recording medium having a recording region comprising a photochromic material whose refractive index varies reversibly without erasing or overwriting the information.
The recording/reproducing method is for the information recording medium 1 having on a substrate a recording region comprising a photochromic material whose refractive index varies reversibly upon irradiation with light of a specified wavelength. The recording/reproducing unit comprises a means to record information by irradiating the recording region with recording light of a specified wavelength, a means to make reproduction light of a wavelength different from that of the recording light incident from a medium adjacent to the recording region on the reproduction light incident side on the recording region at an angle smaller than the critical angle of total reflection of the reproduction light determined by the relation between the refractive index of the substrate and that of the medium, and a means to sense the intensity of reflected light from the recording region.
