PURPOSE: To reproduce data while using a synchronizing signal at any part excepting for a defect even when there is the defect at one part of synchronizing signals on a medium at the time of normal reproducing, by inspecting the defect at the synchronizing signal part of the recording medium on severe conditions just after data are written.
CONSTITUTION: Concerning the recording/reproducing system for recording information corresponding to the front edge and rear edge of a mark and correcting the shift of relative positions between front edge data and rear edge data corresponding to respective synchronizing signals, front edge and rear edge pattern detection circuits 16 and 18 are selected just after data are written, the normality of reproducing synchronizing signals is inspected by a long pattern for synchronizing signal detection, front edge and rear edge pattern detection circuits 17 and 19 are selected at the time of normal reproducing, and the normality of reproducing synchronizing signals is inspected by a short pattern for synchronizing signal detection. Thus, the presence/absence of the defect on the synchronizing signal is severely inspected just after write, and the synchronizing pattern can be properly detected at the time of normal reproducing even when there is any defect at one part of synchronizing signals.
