Abstract:
To set optimal memory length of Viterbi decoding respectively depending on the quality of a reproduced signal.
An SMU 134 of a Viterbi decoder 130 is constituted so that memory length of a state memory can be varied. At the time of applying a power source or the like, test-write is performed for the prescribed region on a magneto-optical disk 6, next, optimum memory length is detected by reading out data and measuring an error rate. Control data Reg indicating this memory length are stored in a register 16. In actual reproducing operation, in the SMU 134 of the Viterbi decoder 130, memory length of the state memory is set in accordance with the control data Reg.
