This information retrieval system includes a digital pen for acquiring stroke information as the orbit of a pen top when information is described in a paper medium and a computer having a database for retrieval for storing various information. The digital pen includes a transmitting part for transmitting the acquired stroke information to the computer. The computer includes a receiving part for receiving the stroke information from the digital pen, a converting part for converting the stroke information into code information by character-recognizing the stroke information received by the receiving part, and a retrieval part for retrieving information relevant to the stroke information from the database for retrieval based on the code information converted by the converting part.
