To enable a user to confirm the abnormality of the relevant information service station by providing a self-diagnostic part at the service station to diagnose at every prescribed time whether the user's own optical communication part and service information part operate normally together with a notification part which stops the optical communication and notifies the user of a portable information terminal of the abnormality when both optical communication part and service information part do not operate normally.
An information service station 2 communicates with a portable information terminal 1 of every user by means of the Ir(infrared rays), retrieves the service information accordant with the user request from a service information storage part 207 or a data base 313 of an area server 31 and transmits the service information to the terminals 1. A self-diagnostic part 214 of the station 2 diagnoses at every fixed time of a timer 220 an optical communication part 204, a service information storage part 207 of a main storage part 202, etc., through a station control part 201. When the diagnostic result of the part 214 is not normal, a fact showing that the station 2 is unavailable is displayed to the user via a notification part 215.
