PURPOSE: To enable a thermal transfer recorder to be loaded with an ink cassette and automatically set conduction time-to-density characteristics of ink paper in a multi-gradation recording.
CONSTITUTION: A mark 9 representing information conduction time-to-recording density characteristics or proper input singnal-to-conduction time characteristics (γ correction characteristics) of ink paper 5 contained in an ink cassette 6 is provided on a part of the ink cassette 6. The ink cassette 6 is loaded on a thermal transfer recorder, and the mark 9 is read by a detecting device 10. In the thermal transfer recorder, in accordance with the information of the mark 9, γ correction characteristics for specifying a relation between a conduction time to a thermal head 7 and a density are set so as to be optimum for the ink paper 5.
