The institution retrieval system retrieves the institution corresponding to the institution name or the institution genres inputted from an input device from the inside of the prescribed retrieval range of map data, wherein the retrieval range is determined, based on the combination of the place names stored in the map data and position specification words to specify the position relation between the place names and the place names or institution genres, and a plurality of kinds of the position assignment words that differ in the positional relations to be specified have been previously stored as the position specification words. Thus, since the different retrieval ranges are set, even if the place names are the same, when the position specification words are different, setting of various retrieval ranges is made possible.
