A mainstream flow speed Us is calculated with use of a mainstream flow rate QA1 flowing through a main flow passage of the thermal air flow meter, an air density ρ and a flow passage sectional area S. A mainstream flow speed Usb of considering the bypass flow delay is calculated with use of the mainstream flow speed Us, a loss coefficient Cs of the main flow passage and a loss coefficient Cb of a bypass flow passage. An air flow rate QA11 delayed by the response delay of the air flow meter due to the bypass flow delay with respect to the mainstream flow rate QA1 is calculated by converting the mainstream flow speed Usb considering the bypass flow delay into an air flow rate. After that, an air flow rate QA2 delayed by the response delay of the air flow meter due to the heat radiation delay with respect to the air flow rate QA11 is calculated and the response delay of the air flow meter is compensated with use of the air flow rate QA2 considering the bypass flow delay and the heat radiation delay.
