To provide an internal combustion engine and an auxiliary substance supplying method for the same capable of preventing increases in NOx, soot and unburned hydrocarbon by temporarily restoring supercharging pressure of a compressor with work of a turbine increased through external supply of an appropriate amount of a gaseous or liquid substance such as steam to an upstream side of the turbine during transient operation.
A gaseous or liquid auxiliary substance M for accelerating turbine rotation is supplied, during transient operation, to a turbine 15a of a turbo supercharger 15 which is arranged on an exhaust passage 13 of an internal combustion engine 1, 1A and 1B. The auxiliary substance M is supplied from a storage tank 31 to an auxiliary substance supplying device 36 through an auxiliary substance supplying passage 32. Also, an auxiliary substance heating device 34 to heat the auxiliary substance M is arranged on the auxiliary substance supplying passage 32. The auxiliary substance heating device 34 is a heat exchanger which uses engine cooling water or engine oil as a heat medium.
