To provide an internal combustion engine carrying catalyst on a wall surface forming a combustion chamber at an upper part of a piston, improving combustion efficiency by accelerating contact of the catalyst and mixed gas of fuel and air, and carrying the catalyst in the combustion chamber having environment favorable for oxidation and purification by the catalyst in the combustion chamber.
In the internal combustion engine carrying the catalyst on the wall surface 11a forming the combustion chamber 11 at the upper part of the piston 10 of the internal combustion engine, an irregular shape is formed on the whole surface or part of the wall surface 11a carrying the catalyst so as to keep flow of combustion gas in a state that heat release rate during combustion in the combustion chamber 11 becomes the maximum in operation at rated output in turbulence area, and to keep friction resistance at the combustion chamber wall surface 11a and the like as low as possible.
