To prevent unpleasant body vibration due to self-ignition at automatic start by preventing the self-ignition of cylinder mixture at automatic start of an engine with an automatic engine stopping/starting device.
During engine operation, the possibility or not of the self-ignition of the cylinder mixture in future at automatic start (the possibility that the temperature of the cylinder mixture rises up to a compression self-ignitable temperature region) is predicted before automatic stop in accordance with a cooling water temperature detected by a cooling water temperature sensor 21 (substitute information for an engine temperature) and an intake air temperature detected by an intake air temperature sensor 15. As a result, if the possibility of self-ignition in future at automatic start is predicted, the automatic stop of the engine 11 is prohibited to prevent the occurrence of the self-ignition. On the other hand, if no possibility of self-ignition in future at automatic start is predicted, the engine 11 is automatically stopped at the time when the conditions of automatic stop are established.
