To prevent failure of an engine caused by increase in supercharging pressure in an engine provided with an exhaust turbine drive type supercharger.
When abnormal conditions of one fuel injection valve 21 out of two fuel injection valves 21 of each cylinder are detected (in other words, there is a possibility of excessive increase in a supercharging pressure of intake air due to the rise in exhaust temperature caused by the deterioration of a combustion state), supercharging pressure reduction control for reducing the supercharging pressure of the intake air (for example, control for opening a waste gate valve) is executed, and the excessive rise in the supercharging pressure is thereby prevented by reducing the supercharging pressure. Further, when the abnormal conditions of one fuel injection valve 21 out of the two fuel injection valves 21 of each cylinder are detected (in other words, there is a possibility of excessive rise in exhaust temperature caused by the deterioration of the combustion state), by executing air-fuel ratio rich control for changing a target air-fuel ratio in a rich direction (for example, richer than stoichiometry) to reduce the combustion temperature, the exhaust temperature is reduced.
