This control device comprises a catalyst 32 for purifying exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine, a means for supplying secondary air to an exhaust system for the internal combustion engine, a cylinder pressure sensor 44 for acquiring cylinder pressure, a means for finding energy loss out of a heating value generated in a cylinder due to exhaust gas in accordance with the cylinder pressure, a means for finding the energy of unburnt fuel in the cylinder, a means for estimating the temperature of the catalyst 32 in accordance with the energy loss due to the exhaust gas and the energy of the unburnt fuel, and a control means for controlling the supply of the secondary air in accordance with the catalyst temperature.
