The control device is equipped with a turbocharger, a throttle capable of adjusting opening independent of accelerator operation by a driver and a variable valve timing mechanism capable of varying valve timing of an intake valve. When throttle opening is determined to be in a supercharging region excluding a full opening region and in a stationary travel region keeping a degree of a change in an engine demand load smaller than that in a transient travelling region (T1), the throttle opening in the region excluding throttle full opening is increased more than that in the transient travelling region while closing timing of the intake valve is delayed or hastened in the direction away from the intake bottom dead center.
