Abstract:
PURPOSE:To prevent generation of misfire in discharging of NOx by arranging a NOx absorbent in an engine exhaust passage, and decreasing the mean air-fuel ratio to the theoretical air-fuel ratio or to the rich side from the lean side when NOx is to be discharged from the NOx absorbent in lean mixture combustion operating state. CONSTITUTION:A casing 27 housing a NOx absorbent 26 is connected to an exhaust manifold 24 through an exhaust pipe 25, and the exhaust manifold 24 and a surge tank 16 are connected to each other by an EGR gas passage 28, at this time the lean mixture combustion operation forms mixture to be formed in a combustion chamber into a layer and forms mixture capable of being ignited within the limited range in the combustion chamber, and NOx to be generated at this time is absorbed by the NOx absorbent 26. When NOx is discharged from the NOx absorbent 26 in the same operation, the mean air-fuel ratio in the combustion chamber is decreased to the rich side from the lean side, so as not to change the air-fuel ratio of mixture capable of being ignited, and to be formed in the partial range in the combustion chamber.
